Black resistance in South Africa took two main forms during the 1970's: industrial action and Black Conciousness. The government were unable to effectively deal with both of these movements and, in the end, decided that they needed to adress apartheid itself. These cruel methods of the government backfired. One of the things that Black Conciousness succeeded in was to give young black people the courage to rise up against oppresive governments and powers. The murder of Steve Biko just added fuel to a movement which the government was unable to stop.
