In addition, General Thomas Gage, commander in chief of British forces in North America, was appointed the new governor of Massachusetts. General Gage placed Boston under military force and kept the colonists from rebelling. By doing this King George hoped to set an example out of Massachusetts of what he will do if they did not follow his laws and pay his taxes.
