Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1880. He was frail child, but during his life he
grew to become an accomplished skier, diver, gymnast, and boxer. While being a nurse in
England during World War I for his German citizenship, he designed exercise apparatus for
immobilized patients by attaching springs to hospital beds. This system formed the foundation
for his style of body conditioning and specialized exercise apparatus, which he brought to New
York City

This semester we started with the beginning mat series. In a few weeks I could see
results. My abs felt stronger and my posture was improved. The workout is difficult but well
worth the effort. I enjoy taking a group Pilates class because I feel more motivated. I would
really like to take a class with the Pilates equipment to see if it is harder.
