The Civil war was the most devastating conflict on American soil. It pitted state against state, family against family, and in some cases brother against brother. Before the war was over more than 1million Americans had been killed or wounded. For the south it meant an entire way of life was gone. The divisions ran so deep so as even to split families, in some cases pitting brother against brother or father against son. The resulting conflict left scars that lasted many generations in this country, and many historians feel that it is only in the last half century have these wounds begun to heal (Foote 50-55).
