Jurgis begins his life in the United States of America in Packingtown, Illinois. He begins working at a meat packing plant. This factory process meat from pigs and cattle. little money and their unions weren't helping them Socialism seemed like such a good idea.
Socialism was the idea of making the government the supreme power and to have extreme equality. This meant no one was rich and no one was poor. The government would own the industry and the government would ensure good conditions.
This never worked because of the influence of the big businesses. These people would not benefit from such a situation.
