The theories mentioned in this essay have greatly influenced treatment approaches that have affected the lives of Black people. It is also intended to connect the cultural history of Black families and the clinical experiences of family therapists who have worked with these families. The process of discrimination does not disappear or lesson with advances in economic status, education, the neighborhood in which one lives, careers or job levels. In my opinion, it is a serious error to separate these issues and to minimize the significance of race. Black families are now viewed from a middle-class frame of reference, which makes the assumption that a healthy family consists of two parents. Today single mothers head many black families.
