Things Fall Apart Essay
In the novel Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, the life of the natives of the Ibo
village Umuofia are described. The action centers around a member of the tribe named
Okonkwo. He is a fairly successful man in the tribe. The novel chronicles his life showing
customs and beliefs held sacred by the tribe. It paints a pretty vivid picture of what life is

for a pretty long time. They had religion, customs, some of
which were superstitious, weird, and sometimes even a little frigherning, and government.
When the white men tried to "save" them, they basically destroyed their civilization. In my
opinion, what the white men were doing wouldn't necessarily have been bad if they had
gone about it in a different way. The villagers were better off before the presence of the
white man ruled their life.
