It was the jazz age and in New York City, Harlem was the site of an explosion of African-American literature, art, music, and culture. In 1929 an average income for a family living in Harlem was $1,808 per year. These Harlem families were making more than most of the whites down in the south. Before the 20's most white Americans carried the stereotype that African-Americans were incapable of culture. The Harlem Renaissance changed all of this.
